In this 8-week course, we will explore a holistic approach to learning a musical role through character embodiment, movement, and vocal technique refinement.  This physical/emotional/spiritual deep dive will serve as a useful tool for performing artists in creating authentic and captivating characters and performances for the stage.

The workshop will culminate with a virtual showcase presented to friends, family, and a group of specially invited theatre industry professionals. Each participant will perform a song that they develop throughout the course. Suggested songs will be chosen from a list of musicals not in the typical “canon” of production or education, and primarily by writers/composers from under-represented demographic communities.

Workshop instructors Chuk Obasi and Jaina Alexander will bring bring a diverse and dynamic overall interdisciplinary experience into the “room.”Blending many artistic philosophies, techniques, and styles, such as Michael Chekhov’s psycho-physical acting technique, Estill Voice training, Musical Theatre dance, and their own combined decades of exploration as performers and educators, Chuk and Jaina are both committed to finding the true and joyful way for characters to break into song!
